2017-08-09 Hale & Farewell

2017-08-09_062.JPG

Our principal speaker for the August 9th dinner meeting, VADM Joseph Tofalo, Commander, Submarine Forces, had to cancel his visit to NSB Kings Bay the day before the event due to a last minute meeting called by the new Secretary of the Navy, Richard V. Spencer. Admiral Tofalo was disappointed, as were we, and expressed his desire to reschedule the visit as soon as convenient to renew his friendships and share with us the latest news from the world of submarines. We did not cancel the dinner, and used the opportunity to recognize many of the NSB Kings Bay leadership who will be departing in the next few months. As part of the program, RADM Randy Crites, commanding officer, Submarine Group 10, brought everyone up to date on happenings at the waterfront and other updates that impact the base and our community.

2017-03-07 "Christmas in March" with the MSST

Navy_League_Visit_to_USCG_MSST_Kings_Bay_Page_3~0.jpg

Members of the Board were honored to be invited to the Coast Guard Maritime Safety & Security Team Kings Bay's quarterly awards ceremony on March 7th. We always knew our adopted MSST command doesn't have a lot of downtime, but when we learned from unit CO LCDR Eric Casper that portions of the Team were on deployment over Thanksgiving, Christmas AND New Years last year, we thought we should do something to recognize their dedication and commitment.

But, how do you adequately thank these outstanding young men and women for their selfless service to our country? The very least we could do was to host a lunch for the Team following the Awards Ceremony. It wasn't exactly "Christmas in March," but we hope our small gesture showed how much we appreciate and care about our adopted unit and their families.

2016-12-10 Wreaths Across America

IMG_1174.JPG

Each December on National Wreaths Across America Day, the mission to Remember, Honor and Teach is carried out by coordinated wreath-laying ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery and more than 1,100 additional locations in all 50 U.S. states, at sea and abroad, including local ceremonies hosted by the Camden - Kings Bay Navy League Council. On Saturday, December 10th, we remembered and honored our fallen heroes by laying two wreaths in honor of the men and women who sacrificed so much for our country. We placed our first wreath at the Veteran's Memorial Park in Kingsland, then travelled to the St. Marys downtown waterfront to release a wreath in the river to honor all the lives lost at sea. Navy Chaplain Damian Velarde was our presiding chaplain.

More than 90 military and Navy League members joined together at the St. Marys Submarine Museum on September 11th for a Hail & Farewell. The Board recognizes that we often don't get an opportunity to meet and get to know new military arrivals to our community in a timely manner, and, it seems like as soon as we do get to know them and their family, their transfer comes through and they're off to a new assignment in support of our national security. This, and future, regularly scheduled "Hail & Farewell" events recognized and introduced recent arrivals in our community, and honored and expressed our thanks to those who will be transferring away in the near future.
