March Luncheon Features Coast Guard Commandant

Securing our borders, saving lives and property at sea, ensuring the safety of professional mariners and recreational and commercial vessels, responding to natural disasters, protecting our marine environment, and defending our nation are all in a day’s work for the United States Coast Guard.

The leader of America’s oldest continuous seagoing service, Admiral Robert J. Papp, Commandant of the United States Coast Guard, will be honored by the Camden-Kings Bay Council and The Camden Partnership at the March 16th (note date and time change) “A Community That Cares” luncheon, and excitement over his visit is palpable.

“What a thrill for us in Camden County to host the Commandant of the Coast Guard,” said Keith Post, retired Senior Chief and Georgia State President of the Navy League. “Since landing the Maritime Safety and Security Team [MSST 91108] in 2003, the Maritime Force Protection Unit Kings Bay in 2007, and the addition of the USCGC SEA DRAGON, it is fitting and very appropriate that Admiral Papp see first-hand how we feel about and take care of the men and women of our military who get to call Camden County home. It is a big win for our area,” Post added. The 85 members of the MSST, along with the Maritime Force Protection Unit at Kings Bay, comprise the Coast Guard presence locally.

“Camden County came very close to losing the Coast Guard’s Maritime Safety and Security Team (MSST) based in St. Marys,” said Sheila McNeill, past president of the Navy League of the U.S. and president of The Camden Partnership. "It was through the advocacy and support of local residents that partnership members were able to educate legislators about the importance of Coast Guard funding, and the team’s presence was secured. This is what we do and this is what partnerships can accomplish,” McNeill added.

See the left-hand column for more information about this meeting, including a link to ADM Papp's bio. To become a sponsor of this event, or to RSVP for the luncheon, please complete and return the Registration/Sponsorship Form with your check, made payable and sent to "The Camden Partnership," PO Box 5222, St. Marys, GA 31558. Please respond by February 24, 2012.

Wounded Warrior Gives Moving Presentation at February 9th Council Meeting

Sergeant First Class Hugh Conlon, U.S. Army (Ret.), a decorated war veteran and spokesman for the Wounded Warrior Project, gave a very moving and powerful presentation at our February 9th Council dinner meeting. Hugh, a medic and Brigade Medical Advisor, shared his story of more than 350 combat missions in Honduras, Panama and Iraq, and the toll taken on his mind and body in caring for wounded U.S. servicemen and women - and wounded enemies he had just seen kill his friends and comrades.

Hugh's story was one of great courage and perseverance. He credits the support received from the Wounded Warrior Project with getting his life back on track after debilitating injuries left him lost and adrift after retirement.

The Board and Officers of the Camden - Kings Bay Council encourage all members to consider donating to The Wounded Warrior Project to continue and expand their valuable work. The Wounded Warrior Project meets the Better Business Bureau's 20 Standards for Charity Accountability, and donations are tax deductible. Learn more about the Wounded Warrior Project here, or download a PDF copy of the brochure handed out by Hugh at our meeting.
