On April 13th we conducted a re-adoption ceremony of Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay to reaffirm our commitment to the Officers, Crew and subordinate commands on the Base. The Camden - Kings Bay Council first adopted NSB Kings Bay on April 14, 2011 with CAPT John O'Neill representing the SUBASE. We re-adopted the Command on October 9, 2014, after CAPT James Jenks took command. At the ceremony, Council President Sam Colville and SUBASE Commanding Officer CAPT Brian M. Lepine signed a proclamation renewing our adoption of the base, reaffirmied our commitment to the Officers, Crew and subordinate commands on the Base
On Saturday, December 10, 2016, as part of the national Wreaths Across America program, we remembered and honored our fallen heroes by laying two wreaths in honor of the men and women who sacrificed so much for our country. We placed our first wreath at the Veteran's Memorial Park in Kingsland, then travelled to the St. Marys waterfront to release a wreath in the river to honor all the lives lost at sea. Navy Chaplain Damian Velarde was our presiding chaplain.
More than 50 Camden - Kings Bay Council members welcomed guest speaker LtCOL David Martinez, commanding officer of the Marine Corps Security Force Battalion, at our annual Toys for Tots Luncheon. An abundance of toys were collected for distribution to kids in Camden County, and the 2017 Board was elected and installed.
The Camden - Kings Bay Navy League's June 10th St. Marys River Sunset Cruise was a perfect way to start summer. Seventy-five Navy Leaguers, guests and even two sailors from the HMS Artful, an Astute-class nuclear-powered fleet submarine of the British Royal Navy, spent two delightful hours cruising the waters around St. Marys. Congratulations to Mitch Wagner who shared his 2016 Camden - Kings Bay Navy League Youth Scholarship winning essay with those in attendance.
Our 2016 Sea Services Awards Banquet honored the 'best of the best' and was attended by more than 100 military and civilian supporters. Special thanks go out to our guest speaker, RDML Randy Crites, Commander, Submarine Group 10, to the large number of individual and community sponsors who made possible our expressions of thanks and appreciation to the honorees (list of donors will be posted soon), to the members who attended to personally extend their congratulations, and to event chairperson Cheryl Aston for her hard work and dedication to making this, truly, our signature event of the year.
Thirty one Camden - Kings Bay and Savannah Council members joined CAPT Steven Hall, Commanding Officer, and CMDCM Matt Suzor, Command Master Chief, for an April 14th tour of TRIDENT Training Facility. The group experienced up-close demonstrations of the damage control wet trainer, the diesel lab, the torpedo lab, the ship control team trainer, and the Coast Guard simulator. As a special treat, the group was also addressed by RDML Michael White, Commander Naval Education & Training Command.
Supporters of our Council's Youth Programs gathered at the St. Marys Submarine Museum on February 11, 2016, for our Annual Dessert Auction. More than 20 desserts were donated by 17 members and military supporters, and a grand total of $1,565.00 - a new record! - was collected. Our Youth Programs include support fort the Dolphin Scholarship Foundation - which provides scholarships for the sons and daughters of our Submariners; awards and holiday party support to the Camden County High School NJROTC unit; a monthly stipend and awards to our local Sea Cadet unit; and our annual $1,000 Youth Scholarship.
For the second year in a row, our Council participated in the Wreaths Across America program by placing wreaths at Veterans Memorial Park in Kingsland, at the Jim Steele resting bench at Oak Grove Cemetery in St. Marys and at the St. Marys Submarine Museum. Chaplain LTJG Damian Velarde, Staff Chaplain at NSB Kings Bay, led participants in a prayer at each site, and shared his thoughts on the sacrifices of past, current and future members of the armed forces. Immediate Past Council President Dave Burch explained the Wreaths Across America program at the Oak Grove Cemetery ceremony, and remembered good friend Jim Steele as one of the many people in and out of uniform who do the right thing each and every day. The Kings Bay Division Sea Cadets provided an honor guard at each ceremony.
Our Annual Toys for Tots Luncheon was held on Sunday, December 6, 2015, at the Laurel Island Links Golf Club in Kingsland, GA. Our guest speaker was LtCol Steve Banta, USMC (Ret), who discussed the Marine Corps Reserve's Toys for Tots program and provided background on the Camden County High School NJROTC program which he heads. Four large boxes of toys were collected from attendees for families in Camden County, and the slate of 2016 Council Board and Officers was nominated, approved and installed. We were honored to have Corp Randall Moore and Lance Corp Josh Dudzik from the Marine Corps Security Force Battalion attend to help collect the toys and join us for lunch.
On December 3, 2015, Council members Cheryl Aston, Shelia McNeil, Keith Post, and Dave Reilly participated in the Navy League's biannual fly-in to Washington, DC, along with 75 other Navy Leaguers from across the country. Collectively, over 175 Congressmen, Senators and staff were briefed on the importance of the sea services in keeping the United States both secure and prosperous in the future.
Captain David Adams, Commanding Officer of USS GEORGIA (SSGN 729) (Blue), was the guest speaker at the Council's October 8, 2015, dinner event held at TRIPLEX onboard Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay.
Council members and co-hosts from the USS Rhode Island welcomed the officers and crew of visiting British submarine HMS Vanguard on August 28th at the St. Marys Submarine Museum. Gifts were exchanged between Council President Hunt Thornhill and Vanguard's commanding officer CDR Watts and a great time was had by all as Kings Bay continues it's reputation as a great port of call for British submariners.
More than 90 members and guests boarded Calvin Lang's Cumberland Princess on June 12th for our annual St. Marys River Sunset Cruise. They were treated to heavy hors d'oeuvres, beer, wine, soft drinks, and spectacular views of Cumberland Island, Fort Clinch, Fernandina Beach, and downtown St. Marys. We also took time during the cruise to recognize Benjamin Siclare, the winner of the Camden - Kings Bay Navy League 2015 Youth Scholarship. Many thanks to Calvin for the use of his boat, and to all attendees for making this event a tremendous success.
The 2015 edition of the Council's Annual Sea Services Awards Banquet was held on May 14, 2015, with special guest RDML Mary M. Jackson, Commander, Navy Region Southeast. The entire Camden County Community gathered to recognize and honor 29 Sailors, Coast Guardsmen and a Marine of the Year from the commands on the Subase and in St. Marys.
VADM Terry Benedict, Director of the Navy's Strategic Systems Programs (SSP), was the special guest speaker at the Council's April 2, 2015, dinner meeting. More than 90 Navy League members, community and military leaders attended the event. The Admiral's comments were very well received, and spoke well for the future of SWFLANT and Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay.
On February 12, 2015, we conducted a Re-Adoption Ceremony for Coast Guard Maritime Safety & Security Team Kings Bay with commanding officer LCDR Eric Casper, and a Dessert Auction to benefit our local Sea Cadet unit. A total of $1,055 was raised to help support Sea Cadet summer drills. Vice President for Sea Services & Family Support Cheryl Aston presided in the absence of Council President Hunt Thornhill.
On Saturday, December 13, 2014, members of the Council and the community gathered at the Kingsland Veterans Memorial Park for the first of what will become an annual wreath laying ceremony held in conjunction with the national Wreaths Across America program.
Fifty-three Navy League members came together in the Osprey Room at Osprey Cove on Sunday, December 7, 2014, to elect and install the new Board for 2015 and donate 6 large boxes of toys to the Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program. Our guest speaker for the event was LtCol Richard Pitchford, commanding officer, Marine Corps Security Force Battalion.
Those who attended our November 13th Council dinner meeting, featuring special guest speaker Major General Garrett Harencak, USAF, Assistant Chief of Staff for Strategic Deterrence and Nuclear Integration, are probably still talking about one of the most interesting and entertaining presentations we've had at any of our meetings. The General gave a rousing, emotional, fact-filled, and at times hilarious argument for continuing support of the nuclear deterrent triad.
Our October 9, 2014, Council dinner meeting featured guest speaker CAPT James W. Jenks, new commanding officer of Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay. We took this opportunity to formally re-adopt the Subase. We also honored the Subase Sailor of the Quarter MM1 John Edwards and his wife Charlene.
More than 90 military and Navy League members joined together at the St. Marys Submarine Museum on September 11th for a Hail & Farewell. The Board recognizes that we often don't get an opportunity to meet and get to know new military arrivals to our community in a timely manner, and, it seems like as soon as we do get to know them and their family, their transfer comes through and they're off to a new assignment in support of our national security. This, and future, regularly scheduled "Hail & Farewell" events recognized and introduced recent arrivals in our community, and honored and expressed our thanks to those who will be transferring away in the near future.
The crew of Coast Guard Maritime Safety and Security Team Kings Bay celebrated a change of command ceremony on July 11, 2014. at their headquarters in St. Marys. During the ceremony, CDR Matthew Baer relinquished command of the unit to LCDR Eric Casper. MSST Kings Bay is an adopted unit of the Camden - Kings Bay Navy League Council. CDR Baer, a good and strong friend of the Navy League, also celebrated 20 years of Coast Guard service on July 11th, and is reporting to the Coast Guard Special Missions Training Center in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
One hundred and twelve Navy League members and friends boarded Calvin Lang's Cumberland Queen II on Friday, June 13th, for a spectacular St. Marys River Sunset Cruise. We enjoyed heavy hors d'oeuvres, beer, wine, soft drinks, and spectacular views of Cumberland Island, Fort Clinch, Fernandina Beach, and downtown St. Marys.
As a special added attraction, during the cruise we recognized Megan Hendricks,the winner of the Camden - Kings Bay Navy League Youth Scholarship, and the following Camden County NJROTC Cadets who earned honors from our Council at the Annual NJROTC Awards Ceremony:

2014-05-08 Sea Services Awards Banquet
Photos from our 2014 Sea Services Awards Banquet where we honored 25 Sailors, Coast Guardsmen and a Marine of the Year for 2013. Our special guest speaker for the event was Michael D. Stevens, Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON) (AW/NAC). The Navy Band of the Southeast Woodwind Quintet provided the music, and Krista Callahan sang the National Anthem.
2014-04-10 RDML Chas Richard, Commander, Submarine Group 10
Admiral Chas Richard, along with his wife Lisa, made their first formal appearance in front of a Navy League audience at our April 10th dinner meeting. The Admiral shared with us his warfighting philosophy as it pertains to the two submarine squadrons, the Trident Refit Facility and the Naval Submarine Support Center under his command.
2014-03-13 Mark Yates & the Navy's Marine Mammals Program
Mark Yates from Kings Bay's Marine Mammal Program drew back the curtain on one of the most secretive Navy programs on March 13, 2014, when he presented a video and answered questions on the Navy's Marine Mammals Program. CDR Richard Dubnansky, commanding officer of USS TENNESSEE (Gold), was our guest at the February 13, 2014, Camden - Kings Bay Council dinner meeting. The CO updated us on USS TENNESSEE Gold's recent activities and achievements and spoke about the challenges he faces at the helm of a major command in our nuclear triad.
2013-12-10 VA Medical Center Visit
Barbara Johns, Jack Mead, Jerry O'Donoghue, and Council President Dave Burch delivered donated supplies and spent time with patients at the Lake City (FL) VA Medical Center on Tuesday, December 10, 2013. Nicky Adams, Assistant Chief, Voluntary Services, served as our tour guide as we visited several of the different wards and spent time with the patients. (Note: due to privacy issues, we were not allowed to take photos of the patients we visited)
2013-12-01 Toys for Tots Brunch
Our 2013 Toys for Tots Brunch was held on December 1st at the Laurel Island Country Club. We were joined by LCpl Anthony Crist and LCpl Jeffrey Kidd who generously gave up a Sunday afternoon to represent the U.S. Marine Corps by accepting toy donations from attendees.

Guest speaker CDR Chad Rowe, officer in charge of the Naval Branch Health Clinic at Kings Bay, presented a briefing about the history of the Clinic, its relationship to Jacksonville Naval Hospital, how the Clinic is structured and staffed, and how they support the war fighters and their families. We also honored the Health Clinic's Sailor of the Quarter, HN Ashley Barker.

Navy League national president Jim Offutt was our guest on September 12, 2013. Jim gave us his "view from the top" including insights into the many ways he hopes to further the Navy League mission and improve the member experience during his term.

Our 2nd Annual St. Marys River Sunset Cruise on June 14th was a tremendous success, with special guests from the USS ALASKA (B). Special thanks to Calvin Lang, Lang's Marina and Seafood, for his donation of the use of the Cumberland Queen II for the evening, and to Georgia Stilson, Gull Weaver and Cheryl Aston for making all the arrangements.

Our 2013 Sea Services Awards Banquet, held on Thursday, May 9, 2012, in the Magnolia Room of the Kings Bay Conference Center, featured special guest VADM Mike Connor, Commander, Submarine Forces. Twenty-three sailors, marines and coastguardsmen were recognized as their commands' Sailors of the Year.

2013-03-02 Dolphin Scholarship Auction
March 2, 2013, Silver & Gold Dolphin Auction, benefiting the Dolphin Scholarship Foundation. Our Council donated a package of 30 seats on our June 14, 2013, River Cruise which went to the USS Wyoming for $1,000, a Treasure Chest of British Submarine Memorabilia, which went for $80, and an 84-piece flatware and serving set (courtesy of Georgia and Colby Stilson) which went for $100.
2012-12-04 VA Hospital Visit
Six Camden - Kings Bay Council members and more than 70 uniformed sailors and marines traveled to the Carl Vinson VA Medical Center in Dublin, GA, on December 4, 2012, to visit with retired Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Coasties, Airmen, and Merchant Mariners hospitalized during the holiday season, express our thanks for their past service and sacrifice and distribute "Thank You" bags.

Major General Thomas L. Wilkerson (USMC RET), President and Chief Executive Officer of the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation spoke at a "town hall meeting" on the history of the Congressional Medal of Honor and its heroes, and the Foundation's latest program to initiate character development programs for all juniors and seniors in American high schools.
2012-11-08 HMS VIGILANT
Our Council was proud to host CDR Mark Lister, commanding officer, officers and crew of HMS VIGILANT for a reception and dinner on November 8th. VIGILANT was visiting Kings Bay for their Demonstration and Shakedown Operation after coming out of refit, and test firing of an unarmed Trident II (D5) ballistic missile on October 23rd. CAPT Richard E. Verbeke, commanding officer of Trident Refit Facility, was our guest speaker on October 11, 2012. Rich and his wife, Ivona, will be moving north to Groton, CT, where Rich will take over as Commander, Regional Support Group.

Our September 20th dinner meeting was a busy night as we welcomed CAPT Harvey Guffey, new commanding officer of Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Navy League Sea Cadets and the 25th Anniversary of our Kings Bay Division Sea Cadets, and conducted a Subase re-adoption ceremony in honor of the new Base CO. We also honored MASN Camron Langley, the Subase Sailor of the Month, who is a Sea Cadet volunteer in addition to his other duties.
2012-07-28 Brunch on the Beau Reve
Council members Roger and Deb Morin are the winners of our "Brunch on the Beau Reve" raffle for a half-day cruise for four people with RDML & Mrs. Tofalo on their beautiful 31-foot Searay Sundancer. They sailed with the Admiral and his wife on July 28th, along with their invited guests Retired Commander Richard McLellan and his wife Kim.
2012-05-22 Navy League Youth Scholarship
Mitchell C. Cross, son of Robyn and Don Cross of Kingsland, has been awarded the 2012 Camden - Kings Bay Council Navy League Scholarship. Mitch plans to matriculate in the Fall at LaGrange College, LaGrange, GA, where he will pursue a Bachelors degree in the Sciences and swim competitively for the College. His post-graduate plans are to complete medical school and devote his life to “providing affordable, quality medical care for those in need.”

Close to 200 Navy Leaguers, Coastguardsmen and women and their families turned out on January 28, 2012, to witness our Council's adoption of the Maritime Safety & Security Team based in St. Marys. A fabulous BBQ, along with tours and demonstrations of equipment and capabilities, rounded out the fabulous afternoon.
